As part of South Asian Heritage Month 2026, the Wokingham Voice of Inclusion and Equality (VINE) proudly hosted its Unity in Diversity webinar on 27 July, bringing together residents, community leaders and partners for an engaging conversation about identity, inclusion and belonging.
South Asian Heritage Month, celebrated annually between 1 July and 31 July, provides an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the rich diversity, cultures, histories and contributions of South Asian communities. This year’s theme,“Unity in Diversity,” highlighted the many languages, faiths, traditions, cuisines, music and stories that make South Asia such a vibrant region, while recognising the values and humanity that connect us all.
The webinar created a welcoming space for participants to share experiences, reflect on the importance of inclusion, and explore how communities can work together to build a stronger sense of belonging across Wokingham Borough. Guest speakers offered personal insights into their journeys and discussed the role that culture, heritage and lived experience play in shaping individual and community identity.
A key message throughout the event was that diversity should be recognised as a strength. While people may come from different backgrounds, cultures and experiences, meaningful inclusion happens when everyone’s voice is heard, valued and respected.
The event also reflected VINE’s continuing commitment to moving beyond conversation and into action. By creating opportunities for learning, dialogue and collaboration, VINE aims to ensure that communities are actively involved in shaping a more inclusive borough where everyone feels they belong. The work of VINE supports Wokingham Borough Council and local partners in addressing inequalities, improving representation and strengthening community cohesion. [wokingham.gov.uk]
Alice Kunjappy-Clifton, Chair of VINE, said:
“South Asian Heritage Month gives us an opportunity not only to celebrate culture and heritage but also to reflect on what brings us together as a community. Unity in Diversity is about recognising and valuing our differences while creating spaces where everyone feels they belong. We are grateful to everyone who joined the webinar and shared their experiences, helping to make the conversation meaningful and impactful.”
VINE would like to thank all speakers, attendees and partner organisations who contributed to the success of the event. Together, we continue to build a borough where inclusion is everybody’s responsibility and where every voice matters.
